Scheduled Lead Check

At the Calgary Climbing Centre, we require everyone to complete a lead check before they can lead belay or climb in our facilities. Please note that you must complete a top rope check before you can attempt a lead check. If you are unsure whether or not you have completed a top rope check, please give us a call at 403-252-6778.

We offer both unscheduled and scheduled lead checks. Scheduled lead checks are 30 minutes in length, allowing time for your instructor to provide minor coaching if necessary. Please remember that our lead checks are checks, not lessons, and that you are expected to demonstrate competence regarding all relevant skills. You must bring a partner; if they have not already completed a lead check with us, they must complete their lead check at the same time.

For each assessment area, your skills will be compared to our facility standards and you will be given a result of either Acceptable (A), Needs Coaching (NC), or Unacceptable (U). One NC action will end an unscheduled lead check; 6 NC actions will end a scheduled lead check. One U action will end ANY lead check immediately.
Climbers who pass will be given a lead tag and permitted to lead belay and climb in any of our facilities.
Climbers who do not pass will be encouraged to take our Lead Lesson. If you fail, no biggie! You are still able to boulder, top-rope, climb on our auto-belays, or train.
